Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy

What?
For ELT today we had a discussion about a culturally sustaining pedagogy.

So what?
- We had to be open to the ideas and experiences of others.
- When we disagreed, we had to make sure that we used arguments to criticize the idea, not the person.
- When offering an opinion or answering a question, we had to support our assertion with arguments and evidence, not generalizations.
- If we were nervous about speaking, we had to remember that our perspective is valid and the group deserves to hear it.
- We had to observe the Chatham House Rule which is:
“When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.”

We watched a video called Brown Brothers where we had to listen to the speech and see what stereotypes we heard.

Now what?
I will try to implement ideas from our discussion today in my teaching practice.

iExperience Spiral of Inquiry

What?
For our iExperience spiral of inquiry this term we are focussing on Science.

So what?
Today we did an activity to help us to get familiar with the Science Achievement Objectives for Levels 1, 2, and 3. We had to match the correct achievement objective for each level in each category.

Now what?
When I plan my Science I will ensure that I choose the correct achievement objective to match the activity.

ECD intention setting activity

One thing that I don’t want to lose
Including more fun and hands-on activities for the learners in their Home Learning
Grid (HLG).

Statement
I would like to continue with this as I saw the wonderful work that learners produced
during
the lockdown using the fun and hands-on activities provided in their Home Learning
Grid (HLG).

Pick 2 cards

How you will know it is continuing
When I do my fortnightly HLG it will include more fun and hands-on activities.

How will others see that
They will be able to see the evidence when they check my HLG.

Distance learning

As a result of the Covid-19 outbreak, schools were closed down on 25 March 2020. This has been a bad experience for both educators and learners.

As a result, I had to provide Distance learning, e-learning, and online learning - a form of education in which the main elements include physical separation of teachers and students during instruction and the use of various technologies to facilitate student-teacher and student-student communication.

I decided to look at how I can better support learners online both during the lockdown and afterward because in our modern society we need to all be tech-savvy. I learned how to use QuickTime Player to make teaching videos to help my learners in their learning.
QuickTime Player allowed me to play, record, edit, and share audio and video files on my computer.

I also learned how to use Google Meet which is a video-conference-calling platform designed primarily for professional use, which linked me together with my learners for real-time interaction.

Meet the Pakihi LCs

What?
For ELT our habitat created a presentation for our Meet the LC evening.

So What?
First we will introduce ourselves. Then we we will talk about what our day and design looks like. Thereafter we will inform the parents about the importance of waste-free lunches. Next, we will let the parents know about the use of devices and our school as well as HERO. After that, we will talk about home-learning. Finally, we will let the parents know what PB4L is all about.

Now what?
I am looking forward to meeting the parents and sharing this presentation with them for a successful year ahead.

HERO

What?
As part of our Educator Only Day this year, we learnt how to use HERO which is a powerful and secure online sharing platform - customisable to reflect the curriculum, vision and values of our school.

So What?
Initially we learnt how to log onto HERO. Then we learnt how to personalise our passwords. Next we added our profile photo. Thereafter we navigated around the menus within HERO. After that we learnt about the student profile icons and flags. Then we learnt how to find staff, learner, habitat and group using the search tool. Next we learnt how to find information about the student. Finally we learnt how to take the daily attendance register.

Now what?
I will use everything that I have learnt about HERO in my daily practice.
